Back to School with Artiera, Dakota & Liberty

Back to School with Artiera, Dakota & Liberty

Get ready for the new school year with Artiera (@TheArtGroupLA, Founder & Head Event Stylist) and her daughters as they take us through the boutiques to find everything from closet staples to must-have desk accessories.

When I’m not planning parties or designing mood boards, I am hanging out with my two “littles” Dakota (7) and Liberty (4). When my two helpers are off duty, it’s always nice to explore new, kid-friendly places around the city. This week, we visited Palisades Village to scratch a few things off our back-to-school list.

Bonjour Fête

This is my absolute favorite go-to party store! The girls spotted the cutest matching lunch boxes and a few packs of their colored pencils. Who knew they would have such great school supplies?

Anine Bing

I know, I know… what could I possibly be getting from our back-to-school list? But Mama also needs to look presentable at all the school functions! I stopped in to grab a vintage tee and leather skirt with the help of my mini stylists.

Amazon Books

Dakota has always loved reading, and her new school requires at least three books off the summer reading list. Although Liberty isn’t reading just yet, I grabbed her Pig the Stinker. With all the fun books, the girls didn’t want to leave!

mini mioche

I’m such a fan of their organic cotton and classic styles—something very rare these days. I grabbed the girls two identical taupe rompers with pale pink tees to match. This time I was the stylist!

Faherty

They had the cutest ponchos that I thought would be perfect to throw over their new mini mioche rompers. You just never know what fall will look like in L.A.!

Dakota and Liberty are now ready to take on the year ahead! Do you have everything you need? Discover the perfect pieces from any of the above brands, or find more shops at Palisades Village.

Village Voices: Turning Down the Noise with SunLife Organics’ Hayley Gorcey

Village Voices: Turning Down the Noise with SunLife Organics’ Hayley Gorcey

Through the ins and outs of co-founding and building a company from the ground up, Hayley Gorcey (SunLife Organics) has manifested something truly magnificent. So why doesn’t it always feel like it?

Sometimes it takes a little more than R&R to get back to your best self. Follow along Hayley’s journey of reflection, made possible by unplugging, traveling, and ultimately gaining a truer sense of being.

At the end of 2017, I was 29 years old and running a company I co-founded at just 22. Even with seven locations, hundreds of employees, and millions of dollars in sales to show for my efforts, I felt completely lost. I had accomplished and produced so much, yet I felt utterly confused and disconnected.

After almost 30 years, it was clear that no one was going to just hand me all the space I needed to connect with myself – I had to find it and protect it like it was my job. So, I deleted the Instagram app, stopped watching television almost entirely, and took six weeks off from work for the first time ever. I also got very familiar with Airplane Mode.

I needed to know who I was, without any points of reference or comparisons, and without any other voices telling me who I was or how they expected me to be.

While technology has provided us with so many incredible advancements and conveniences that give us back more time and space, it’s also created an endless array of ways to fill that space back up. I didn’t set out to lay off it for a specific amount of time, but before I knew it, that first day turned into a week, then a month, then a year.

As it turned out, I had a lot more space available to me than I initially thought, and spacious living became a more permanent lifestyle choice for me. I began to hear what I’d longed to hear most: my own voice. I started to feel a sense of ease and clarity like I’d never experienced before. My relationships began feeling deeper and more fulfilling, including the one I had with myself.

When we talk about wellness, we talk a lot about food, exercise, sleep, etc. But what I think is often overlooked as a key tenet of wellness is authenticity and how to nurture it— giving yourself the space in an increasingly noisy environment to get to know who you are, what you need, what you have to say, and how you want to say it.

I think most people’s wellness goals are to naturally and intuitively make the most nutritive choices for themselves. How much easier would that be if you actually took the time to get to know yourself and what truly nourishes you?

Time is finite. For everything we say yes to doing, we are, for that split moment, saying no to everything else. With this in mind, it seems to make less and less sense that we would choose to expose ourselves to things that make us feel lesser, envious, disdainful, disappointed, or unfulfilled. But maybe all of those reactions are really just that subtle voice inside asking you to set down your phone, switch off the TV, and shut the laptop.

Your Soul has something to say. You are here for a reason. You have something meaningful to contribute. And the answers to all your burning questions may be different than they were 10 days, weeks, months, or years ago. You just need to leave the space for it all to be revealed in the most miraculous way.

So, the next time you have a free moment, instead of engaging auto-pilot and falling into your typical time-filling rituals, see what happens when you don’t try to fill the space with anything at all.

Village Voices: Season’s Greetings from The Little Market’s Lauren Conrad and Hannah Skvarla

Village Voices: Season’s Greetings from The Little Market’s Lauren Conrad and Hannah Skvarla

There’s no doubt about it: nothing beats knowing that you purchased someone the perfect gift. At The Little Market, Lauren Conrad and Hannah Skvarla make it easy to check off everybody on your list while supporting fair wages for women artisans and makers around the world.

Here, Lauren and Hannah show us how to give—and give back—this holiday season.

Dear readers,

We are so grateful to be part of the incredible Palisades community. We have loved getting to know so many wonderful people, and we are so inspired by how much this community cares about giving back.

Everything at The Little Market is handmade by artisans and makers from around the world—as locally as the ladies from the Downtown Women’s Center to as far-reaching as our basket-weaving partners in Rwanda. Through our travels we’ve heard stories of how these women yearn to provide for their families but lack the opportunity to sell their goods.

When you invest in women, you’re investing in the futures of all the people whose lives they touch. The Little Market offers a platform to amplify their reach and their earning potential. Globally, women who earn sustainable income are able to purchase more nutritious food for their families, send their children to school, and earn more respect in their communities, feeling empowered to use their voices to speak up for their rights.

We hope you will enjoy finding something special for everyone on your list at The Little Market. We offer a selection of curated gift boxes (perfect for this holiday season), as well as over 50 candle scents that we can personalize for you in-store.

Every purchase truly does make a difference, and we’re so excited to see a wave of change sparked by conscious shopping.

Happy holidays!

Love,
Lauren Conrad and Hannah Skvarla

Village Voices: Carbon38 Shows Us 10 Ways to Sweat It Out in Style

Village Voices: Carbon38 Shows Us 10 Ways to Sweat It Out in Style

Fall’s must-have jewels? Check. The season’s perfect date-night ensemble? Currently wearing on repeat. Autumn’s most glow-worthy skincare? Yep, we’ve got that one covered, too. But, when it comes to looking au courant from street to studio, we had a little extra homework to do.

That’s where Stephanie Dardenne, Director of Merchandising for Carbon38, jumped in and gave us a little fall-fashion boot camp. Here, we break it down in ten, easy-to-remember steps to looking fit and fabulous in the final weeks of 2018.

    1. Go playful with pastels. I love Varley’s beautiful Eastham Tight and Johnston Tee, Carbon38’s best-selling Dusty Blue Sayang Legging and Beyond Yoga’s Blush Pearlized Set.
    2. Earthier tones are the new neutral. Spring and summer saw dustier, muted neutrals, which have transitioned into deeper, earthy tones that look beautiful on every skin tone. A few pieces to stock up on: Beach Riot Stars & Moon Sweat Set and Beyond Yoga’s Alloy Ombre Legging and Bra Set.

    1. Keep it Monochromatic. Monochromatic, tone-on-tone dressing feels elevated and polished, while still allowing you to be playful with textures or tones. Try pairing a cozy cream Blanc Noir Aspen Faux Fur Jacket with a pair of cream leggings or going for an all-black ensemble with Carbon38’s Takara Legging and a black leather jacket from LTH JKT.
    2. Mix in Metallics. We’ve curated an incredible metallic assortment for fall; it’s something we really love, so you’ll see it from holiday through Spring 2019. For a full look, we love wearing Beyond Yoga’s Alloy Ombre Set in Red Rock. A subtle, off-duty look that really shines is NIKE’s NP Women’s top with metallic gold pops.

    1. We’re living for Leopard. Exaggerated oversized or popped with unexpected colors, there’s a lot of playfulness infused in this season’s take on animal prints. My favorite is the Sundry Pigment Mink Set.
    2. Gotta Have That Girly Camo. One of the hottest trends for fall is the contradiction of masculine trends with feminine details. A hoodie with a traditionally masculine, boxy silhouette done in a soft rose, or a camouflage print overlaid with a bright floral. The WITH x Carbon38 Blush Camo Set is one of my absolute favorites as well as the SAM. Camo Freedom Vest.

  1. The Biker Short Is Back & Better Than Ever. One of my favorite looks for fall is pairing a biker short with a classic cable knit NSF Jolene Sweater. Carbon38 just launched the Takara Biker Short (a high-shine version that arose from our best-selling legging of the same name) that feels very fashion forward.
  2. Statement Seamless Sets. As the seasons change and temperatures begin to drop, lightweight, seamless pieces that are perfect for layering, like the LNDR Resistance Legging and Space Crop Top in Burgundy Marl, is a key trend we’re seeing throughout active and lifestyle-wear.
  3. Sleeker Sweat Set. People are searching for a more polished sweat set—one you can wear throughout the day and pair with Dior kitten heels. I love the options like NIKE’s NSW Jacquard Sweat Suit.
  4. Keep It Cropped. Crop tops and high-waisted leggings continue to be a trend for the season, but as we head into fall, consumers are replacing their cropped tops with cropped sweatshirts. I love a sleek black Takara Legging from Carbon38 with a chunky crop sweatshirt and biker books. Michi’s Farfalla Crop in Dark Grey would pair well with this look as well!

For the full interview with Dardenne, head here.

If you can’t wait to suit up in all her recs, run (don’t walk) over to Carbon38 to get your hands on each of the bestsellers listed above.

And, don’t forget to join Carbon38 every Wednesday, from 10AM-11AM, for their Fitness Series, featuring LA’s favorite instructors like Erica Hood, Marie Grujicic, Danielle Pascente, Lauren Arps and more!

Village Voices: Come Play Inside Tamara Mellon’s Shoe Closet

Village Voices: Come Play Inside Tamara Mellon’s Shoe Closet

Tamara Mellon co-founded Jimmy Choo in 1996. Today, she’s still obsessed with shoes, but not the traditional way of doing things. So she started over. This is her reboot (pun intended). She’s redefining luxury and doing what she does best: design shoes and break rules.

On the eve of her first-ever shop opening under her namesake label, Tamara Mellon enlightened us with her 3.0 take on shoe shopping.

Since it’s a new concept, I wanted to take a moment to explain the design behind my first-ever shop, now open at Palisades Village.

The space is designed to feel like my personal shoe closet in my home, and for women to see and feel how beautiful the shoes are in real life— just like I do every day. But I believe that shoe shopping should not only be beautiful, but seamless. The way I’ve designed my first-ever shop solves two common frustrations with traditional shoe shopping.

In the traditional experience, women have to ask if the shoes on display are available in her size. In my shop, we’ve exposed all of the shoes we have available, and organized them by size. This allows the customer to instantly know what’s available in her size, and also to grab and try on the exact pair she’d like at her leisure.

Another issue our shop solves within the traditional experience is cutting down wait times to find the right fit. For example, a boot might fit differently than a pump. Instead of waiting for various sizes, all of the sizes in every shoe are displayed so women can easily move between sizes and fit.

I know that women are insanely busy. The shop is designed to help them find the exact shoe they want as effortlessly as possible. I can’t wait to have women experience the shop. It’s a dream of mine that’s been a long time coming, and it’s especially exciting to be a part of this community at Palisades Village with like-minded female-led brands.

Head to the newly opened Tamara Mellon shop to get your very own pair of next-generation luxury shoes.

The Bay Theatre, Re-Imagined: 10 Reasons to Line Up on Opening Day

The Bay Theatre, Re-Imagined: 10 Reasons to Line Up on Opening Day

This November 10, the theatre will officially open its legendary doors, serving complimentary varieties of popcorn to enjoy during your film. But, before the theater rolls its first opening credits, here are ten behind-the-scenes perks every movie-goer can look forward to opening day and beyond.

1. Originally designed in 1948 and known for attracting Hollywood notables, today’s Bay Theatre preserves the glamour of the classic movie-going experience.

2. Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas is now operating the local landmark which closed 40 years ago.

3. The new theater features an exclusive 35M projector that will be used for special events and screenings.

4. It also features the marquee that was part of the original design by architect S. Charles Lee, which was never used in the finished version.

5. There are five auditoriums that accommodate 30 to 77 people each, so it feels more like a private screening room than a giant megaplex.

6. Cinépolis’ cinemas feature state-of-the-art digital projection and sound.

7. Each theater is furnished with automated leather recliners and push-button waiter service.

8. Movie-goers can enjoy fine-dining and wine service (or a burger and beer) delivered straight to their seats during the film.

9. Guests can rent out the theater for private events like birthday parties.

10. The theater will host community events including “mommy-and-me” movie outings, hosted screenings for local directors & actors, corporate events, and special screenings.
